What's With The Shoes?

One step.

One moment.

One heartbeat at a time.

1.. 2.. 3..

1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3...

Click over to your favorite site or social channel. Scroll for 5 seconds. Odds are good you'll find a list of the top X-count of things to consider, know, be aware of, be surprised about, buy, need, or (insert 'must' here) for 2013. If the list maker chose to be on the tails side of the list coin, you might be reading about the top X-count from 2012.

Before I get to my 1, 2, 3, please know that I am not judging the actual work put into considering, thinking about, reflecting, or analyzing. I am shrugging off the sugar-rushed itch to click those links for the reader, and on the production side - the need to add that list-minded syrup into the content needle.

My 1, 2, 3.. is not a list.

The 1, 2, 3.. I'd like for you to consider is the combination of the rhythm with the steps you take. Physical steps (how to walk on a wooden floor?) Baking steps (cupcakes?) Tango steps (wrong foot, oops?) Steps (on the stairs?) Steppes?! No.. The 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3's are how your heart and mind and soul weave in and out and move you when you're in the middle of an honest workout, in the flow of a presentation, in the zone with a best friend, in the gaze caught in her eyes when you connect, in the thought as the world zips by outside of the train window, or even in the numbers being crunched on the screen.

The 1, 2, 3.. is your 1, 2, 3. It isn't the 1, 2, 3 of your mother, favorite blogger, author, boss, or boyfriend. It isn't a list to follow, and it doesn't show up on January 1st. It's there when you're there. There? There. You know your personal there. Accountant or acrobat, profession aside - it's the you that you know, and knew as a kid, and feel when your hand is held to your chest and you listen.

Here's to listening to that 1, 2, 3 in the "New Year". Here's to making every new morning more of a celebration than a January 1st has served over the past few years. Here's to the symphony of 1, 2, 3's we learn to play and dance to and share with the world.

Learn to count. It starts with 1, 2, 3..
